Advance voting for the general elections is now open with 485 voting booths available throughout the country where people can cast their votes.

Chief Electoral Officer Alicia Wright says there's been a big increase in advance voting over the past two elections.

"We are providing even more voting places in convenient locations where people can cast an early vote," she says. "Advance voting places are located where people live, work, study and shop, including universities and shopping malls, and many of them are open after hours and at weekends."

With 12 days to polling day, 534 candidates from 16 political parties are out to win votes and 89 per cent of eligible voters have enrolled.

Labour MP Carmel Sepuloni says she can't remember an election that's generated as much public interest as this year's.

She says Jacinda Ardern has ignited an unprecedented level of interest in the campaign and hopes that translates into votes.

"I can't remember it being this busy. There's so many people showing up to the political panels. There's real interest out there and hopefully that's reflected in the turn out on election day."

Election day is on September 23.
