An advocate fighting for refugees in Papua New Guinea's Manus Island says it makes no sense why Australia is holding off Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's offer to take up 150 refugees.

Seven hundred refugees detained in Manus for the last four years have been transferred to other centres and left to fend for themselves after Australia shut down its processing centre.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul says Australia cannot turn its back on New Zealand's offer.

"It makes no sense whatsoever from a humanitarian point of view, from a common sense point of view," he says. "Ultimately the Australian government will need to provide safe and secure futures for the refugees."

"Turning its back on New Zealand's offer is just prolonging the inevitable and is prolonging the suffering on Manus Island needlessly."
