Samoan students in Auckland are being encouraged to move outside of classrooms to preserve their language and culture.
Lemoa Henry Fesulua'i, Head of Pacific Studies at Mangere College in South Auckland, is encouraging fluent Samoan speakers to help preserve their language.
"Go to some of the community workshops, go to churches and family events, so students are using the language more often," he says.
Fesulua'i says without community support, the Samoan language is at risk.
"We just can't rely on the institutions to teach. There also should be a responsibility from the community and those who can actually speak to make sure they converse and communicate all the time in their language."
