The Cook Islands Sevens team has been placed with Ireland, Uruguay and Jamaica in Pool G of the Hong Kong Sevens.

Coach Vase Samania says his team has their work cut out for them as they prepare for Hong Kong.

Governments from countries around the world have been putting more money into resources for teams since the Sevens became an Olympic sport.

Samania says they will go to Hong Kong and do the best they can, but they have to be realistic about their chances of winning.

He says most teams playing in the Hong Kong Sevens have been around the circuit for a while and they can't take these teams easily.

Samania named his 12-member Sevens team earlier this month, nine are local-based and the remaining three are from New Zealand.

Team manager Simon Iopu says the players had to meet specific fitness, behavioural and commitment standards to make the team.

He says the players have shown their hunger to represent their families and country by putting their bodies through the "hardest type of training on the planet" for the past few months.

The Hong Kong Sevens will be held from April 6 to 8.
