Tonga's Elections Supervisor Pita Vuki is pleased with the turnout in last month's election, but he says there is much to do to encourage greater participation.

It was the first time Tonga has had a snap election since they introduced the democratically-elected process 12 years ago.

Vuki says the newly elected MPs will serve a four-year term.

"Voter turnout in this election was something around 67 per cent. We still have much to do to improve the numbers."
