Cameron who is of Niuean, Maori and Scottish descent says the credit goes to his supporters.

"An athlete chasing their dreams is not easy," he says. "The success on the court starts with their support and the support of my team mates and the coaches and it's just endless.

Tall Blacks' coach Paul Henare says he's proud of his close friend.

"He deserves it, he's done so much for our country and basketball," he says. "He's an unsung hero and I'm happy for him to get this recognition."

Henare says Cameron's story has captured the heart of many basketball fans worldwide.

"It doesn't matter where we are in the world, as soon as he walks in to the gym someone knows him and what he's achieved and that speaks volumes."
