Former Wellington Mayor Mark Blumsky is heading to Australia's Gold Coast next month as part of Niue's bowling team for the Commonwealth Games.

The 58-year-old business entrepreneur and his wife Pauline are one of five bowling couples travelling to the games which kick-off on April 4.

Blumsky says the Niuean bowlers have prepared well and could give their international competitors a run for their money.

"We've got 10 very excited lawn-bowlers that are just about training daily as they prepare for the Gold Coast," he says. "I'm lucky enough to have been selected. We're training hard, we've come across to New Zealand three times in the last year to bring ourselves up to speed so we're looking forward to it."
