Tonga's Speaker of the House Lord Fakafanua has cleared up news about a petition to impeach six Cabinet Ministers and the Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva.

Lord Fakafanua told Le'o 'o e 'Otu Felenite that a petition was submitted to Parliament in June with three proposals: to defer the 2018/2019 Budget, to conduct an urgent audit over the accounts of certain Ministers, and a notice to Parliament of a motion that would be submitted in the future to impeach six Cabinet Ministers and the Prime Minister.

But Lord Fakafanua said no official motion of impeachment has been submitted to Parliament.

"Even though the petition alluded to impeachment motions being tabled in the House, as of right now, we haven't actually seen any."

"A lot of the misleading information surrounding Parliament's agenda is around the fact that there's an impeachment being discussed however that's not the case, we haven't formally seen an impeachment motion... according to the constitution there's actually a due process for that."

Parliament will meet this morning where the Auditor-General's special report on the audit of six ministers' accounts will be discussed.

The six Cabinet Ministers and Prime Minister are also expected to reply to the accusations made against them.

"Unless one of the members submits a motion for impeachment, that's all we have right now," said Lord Fakafanua.
