A media expert wants people to be aware of personal information collected from the internet, being analysed to construct a politically targetted message.

Victoria University's media studies lecturer, Michael Daubs, says mass surveillance coupled with computer analysis programmes, is a potentially evil mix.

"People don't necessarily understand how the things they share online can be used to manipulate them," he says. "It's a form of propaganda and emotional manipulation."

Daubs says users' online information is used to build an individual profile which can influence who you vote for.

"The depth and breadth of the surveillance goes on in attempting to manipulate us emotionally in order to get us to vote a certain way," he says.

Daubs believes results in the recent elections of Great Britain and the United States have been affected and even determined by targeted messages.
