Vui Mark Gosche begins his new role at Counties Manukau District Health Board today, determined to salvage its reputation as one of the country's busiest hospitals.

As board chair he inherits the responsibilities of fixing the Middlemore Hospital saga following damning reports of extreme mould, asbestos and raw sewerage as well as disgruntled management and staff.

There's been lots of reportage on the state of the hospital buildings' poor conditions over past months.

Vui says he's ready to roll up his sleeves and get the hospital's health and safety priorities in place.

"What the Minister [of Health, David Clark] is being assured of by the current board and staff is that the building is safe," he says.

"I'll get in and look at that with the board and the CEO and the managers to make sure that as the work proceeds, that health and safety is at the top of the list."

"That's a responsibility that the board and the management have, not only to the staff but to the public, and the patients that occupy those buildings."
