Fijian community leaders and educators aim to establish a National Fijian Language Council to facilitate the preservation of the Fijian language.

Hundreds packed into Auckland Museum over the weekend for the launch of Fiji Language week where community leaders continued talks around the initiative.

Spokesperson Sai Lealea says the community can't continue to rely on government support for Fiji Language Week.

"Each of the main centres in New Zealand run our own programmes for the language week but what's really needed is a national body to co-ordinate that," he says. "That's currently being performed by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples and those of us who've worked in government for many years and who helped set up the national language bodies for Pacific groups."
