Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Henry Puna announced the appointment today, saying the appointment of Ms Wright-Koteka, his former Chief of Staff and the national Energy Commissioner, is acknowledgement of the importance the Cooks is putting into further strengthening co-operation with New Zealand.

Foreign Secretary Tepaeru Herrmann has welcomed the appointment, noting the role is a significant one for the Cook Islands Foreign Service.

The Cooks High Commission in Wellington is the country's only fully-fledged diplomatic mission.

Ms Wright-Koteka takes over from Deputy High Commissioner Karopaerangi Ngatoko, who took on High Commissioner duties in July, following the end of tenure of Teremoana Yala.

The Ministry expect the High Commission to have the full complement of three diplomats by the end of the first quarter of 2019, with current Trade and Foreign Affairs Piakura Passfield scheduled to join Ms Wright-Koteka and Ms Ngatoko to assume the First Secretary role in the New Year.
