Samoa kicked-off the two-day tournament in an opening match against Kenya going down by five points: 14 - 19. The men in blue made a comeback however, in a close run against USA ending with 14 to 10. They then sealed their quarterfinal spot with a convincing win against Canada: 22 - 14.

Coach Gordon Tietjens says he's pleased with his team’s wins but knows tomorrow's going to be a tough day.

Papua New Guinea went down to a strong South African side, but managed to sneak in a try: 36 - 5. They went down again in a run against England, 27 to 0, and then finally got back on their feet in an impressive win against Russia: 33 - 7.

The Olympic gold-medalists made an entrance to the tournament with a 28 to nil win over Wales. A nail-biting match against Spain had the Fijians start their second half with only five players on the field, two penalised for high tackles. Spain took advantage of their five-side opposition with two tries, but the Fijians came back in full-force with the full team back on the field and sealed the match 24 to 12. They ended day one on a winning streak, beating Australia 26 to 15 and securing a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
