Samoa was the only Pacific nation to lose their first Rugby League World Cup game in the weekend.

Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Tonga all won their first games of the tournament with flying colours.

Celebrations continued into the early morning in parts of South Auckland to mark Mate Ma'a Tonga's 50 - 4 victory over Scotland last night in Cairns, Australia.

Papua New Guinea thumped Wales in a 50 - 4 home game on Saturday and Fiji hammered the USA 58 - 12 in Townsville, Australia.

Toa Samoa went down 38 - 8 to the Kiwis.

Captain Frank Pritchard was emotional following their loss and says it hurts.

"Us Samoans know, we play for everyone. You leave the field giving it your all and you don't wanna lose that way."

Coach Matt Parish says despite the loss, they need to move on and prepare for this weekend's clash with Mate Ma'a Tonga.

The two Pacific nations go head-to-head this Saturday at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton.
