Re-enacting slavery in the Solomon Islands in the early 1800s has won 18-year-old Liana Sabetian a dance scholarship she'll be receiving from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
"I created my own dance about the slavery, the black-birding in the 1800s and that's what I talk about and got the scholarship, top of New Zealand for dance."
This week the west Auckland student, whose dad is from Iran and mum from the Solomon Islands, starts her biomedical science studies at Auckland University after notching excellence in NCEA Level 3.

Sabetian was Rutherford College's Year 13 top Pasifika scholar of the year and is chuffed she can pursue her passion for dance alongside her academic pursuits.
