Tonga Power kicks back to life

Tonga Power operations general manager Seti Chen is relieved a portion of New Zealand's $21 million aid allocation will go towards repairing power poles and restoring electricity in Nuku'alofa's CBD.

Seti Chen says New Zealand's contribution will speed up the restoration of power to homes and businesses and help upgrade the network in Nuku'alofa.

"Majority of the area of Pili had been critically affected," he says. "Poles, wires, even households' service lines - this is a perfect area to see firsthand the restoration that has taken place in the last three weeks."

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern walked through some of the suburbs worst affected by the recent cyclone and visited schools that remain closed after Gita, before heading to the Cook Islands with her Pacific Mission delegation.
