His body was alongside a 25-year-old woman who was taken to Auckland Hospital with gunshot injuries.
Police are on the hunt for two offenders who are of Tongan descent.
Detective Inspector Tofilau Faa Va'aelua says they don't have much information at present, but from what they've gathered, the incident was not random.
"We believe there might be something a lot more sinister with the offender," he says. "The way they've shot and killed the victim, the way they've injured the other victim... we believe there's a lot more to it."
A post-mortem examination is being carried out today by the Coroner.
The woman is in a serious but stable condition and is recovering in hospital.
Police will not reveal the relationship between the victims.
Detective Inspector Tofilau says they want to hear from anyone who saw the victims' vehicle on Greenwood Road early yesterday morning or witnesses any suspicious activity in the area.
