The 34-year-old then took up the challenge of cross-country skiing and has finally qualified for the Winter Olympics to be held in PyeongChang next month.
He says it was his last chance to qualify and it feels good to finally make it.
"This was the last day of qualification for me, this is the end of the qualification period. I had seven races and they all failed," he says. "I gave it absolutely everything and I'm just so happy and so blessed to be here."
